Sir,
It was a great pleasure to read the interesting clinical study by
Bacci et al concerning Ewing’s sarcoma family tumours (ESFT) and
the differences in clinicopathological characteristics at presentation between
localised and metatastatic tumours. We would like to share our experience
in treating patients with ESFT in the 2nd Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
Unit and confirm that a high level of serum lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) is related to poor prognosis and a prolonged chemotherapy period.
LDH seems to be an important biomarker of survival for patients with an ESFT. We would like to have the authors’ opinion about the minimum serum LDH
level that is considered to be a poor prognostic factor for survival and outcome after chemotherapy. Is a high serum LDH level correlated with the
biological characteristics of ESFT or with genetic and epigenetic factors of
the hosts?
