Continuing Medical Education

The October 2009 CME test is now available online. The questions are based on the review articles and aspects of current management that have appeared in the journal over the last quarter. Satisfactory completion of the questionnaire provides evidence of a thorough knowledge of the content of these review articles.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) and the recording of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) are increasingly important components of the requirements for orthopaedic surgeons to continue practising around the world. Systems for documenting this and the annual requirements vary enormously. In many countries there is a state of flux. Currently, the most common way of quantifying participation in CME is through the accumulation of points that reflect the time spent in educational activity. This questionnaire, if submitted for marking, will be assessed in this way. If a reader submits responses that reach a standard that suggests satisfactory assimilation of the material then a certificate will be earned recording the award of five CME points. This can then be filed in the individual's CPD portfolio as evidence of satisfactory participation. Online completion through the journal's website will automatically lead to assessment and the award of any appropriate certificate of completion.

Clearly the multiple choice questionnaire can also be used by those who do not currently need to collect such evidence of participation. Examples might include those who are not required to do so by their national organisation and trainees who are preparing for examinations. For the latter it must be borne in mind that these questions are really only testing factual knowledge and are quite specific to the articles published in JBJS (Br) over the last quarter. They are not meant to reflect the standard of knowledge required to pass orthopaedic examinations and assessments in any particular country, though we hope that they can still serve a useful and informal purpose in trainee education.

Please note the July 2009 CME questionnaire is now closed. The answers were published in the October 2009 issue of the Journal and can also be found below.
